The Department of Sociology was established in Hyderabad in 1964 with Prof. Shafi Mohammad Memon as its first chairman then the department was shifted to its own building of Allama I.I Kazi campus Jamshoro in 1970. At present the department consists of twelve faculty members and most of the faculty members are well equipped having research qualification to their credit of academic trainings.

This department has been imparting quality education. Courses have been designed to equip students with professional skills and knowledge. The curriculum is relevant to the changing needs of society and many of the graduates of this department are currently holding executive positions in private sector as well as in government sector. The seminar library is equipped with 2000 books and provides access to latest publication and journals on various topics of sociology. 

Faculty members are actively engaged in research and also provide research guidance to candidates enrolled for the degree of M. Phil and Ph. D. Eight M. Phil scholars in (2005) have successfully completed their course work. Now they are engaged to complete their thesis work at different topics under the guidance of Prof. Khalida Sheikh, Pro. Izzat Khawaja and Prof.Dr. Tanvir Junejo.
